Certain Dri’s Medical Advisory Board Offers Tips for Staying Dry This Winter

With cooler temperatures fast approaching, the uncomfortable feeling and worry about perspiration is a thing of the past for many men and women; however, this isn’t the case for the millions of you who suffer from excessive perspiration, also known as hyperhidrosis.

Even in cooler temperatures, sweating can be an issue. In fact, according to two national surveys conducted for Certain Dri (www.certaindri.com):

Forty-five percent of U.S. adults* – which translates to almost 110 million people – report that perspiration is either “sometimes” or “often” a problem for them and 25 percent of these respondents indicated their perspiration “is the same regardless of season”

Thirty percent of U.S. adults** – which translates to more than 70 million people nationwide – admit to suffering from problematic foot sweat and three-quarters of this group also battle foot odor. What’s more 13 percent of these respondents also indicated that their feet always feel excessively sweaty, regardless of the season

As you know, during the cooler months, excessive perspiration is not only brought on by warm indoor temperatures and heavier clothing but also by stress and even every day tasks.

Contrary to popular belief, people do not sweat less in cooler weather months. Our bodies still lose up to a quart of fluid a day, but it’s more noticeable. Someone with excessive perspiration, or hyperhidrosis, as it’s called, will perspire even more, no matter what season it is.

Not to worry, below Dr. David Bank, medical advisor to Certain Dri, offers these tips on how to feel and stay dry during the cooler months while wearing the latest fashions:

Curb the waterworks…while you sleep: Look for Certain Dri® Anti-Perspirant Roll-On with 12 percent aluminum chloride, which is the same active ingredient in prescription-strength antiperspirants, but in a gentler, non-alcohol formula. Certain Dri Anti-Perspirant is clinically tested and dermatologist-recommended as the most effective solution for excessive underarm perspiration, as well as for occasional, excessive perspiration due to stress, heat, sports, occupation, etc. Now available in a SOLID application.

Layer Up: If you are still concerned that you might develop noticeable sweaty pits or if you experience back sweat from time to time, consider wearing a form fitting undershirt or tank top made of a fabric that wicks away perspiration from the body. This will leave you feeling dry and worry free all day.

Chill Out: Consider relaxation techniques, such as yoga. This can help to control the stress that can also trigger perspiration. “Many times people who suffer from excessive perspiration also worry about it so much that they create a spiral effect. Suffering from excessive perspiration can be a debilitating condition on an emotional, social and functional level,” says Dr. Bank

Stomp Out Sweat and Odor: To help keep your feet dry during the day, apply new Certain Dri Feet Moisture Control Pads to your feet at night. Formulated with 12 percent aluminum chloride and approved by the American Podiatric Medical Association, your feet will feel dry an fresh all day. For added protection and to combat foot odor sprinkle new Certain Dri Feet Microsponge Powder on your feet each morning. The powder contains the patented Microsponge Delivery System that is triggered into action with heat, friction or moisture to release five odor fighting ingredients that provide several levels of odor defense.

Eat and Drink Right: Keep in mind certain foods and beverages can exacerbate an excessive perspiration problem and also cause increased body odor, such as drinks that contain caffeine or foods that contain high amounts of garlic or onions.

If over-the-counter options don’t solve the issue of excessive sweating for you personally, you should speak to a dermatologist or other health professional about a stronger prescription antiperspirant or other options available.

If you haven’t heard yet, Certain Dri® just launched a new SOLID application formulated with 25% aluminum sesquichlorohydrate (Anhydrous). Check it out!

Certain Dri® Solid Anti-Perspirant was created specifically to complete the line of Certain Dri antiperspirant products for those who want the same 72-hour protection from excessive underarm perspiration in a solid application. The product is specially-formulated to provide those who experience irritation from aluminum chloride but need everyday, all-day dryness from excessive underarm perspiration.

Ingredients: Certain Dri® Solid Anti-Perspirant contains 25% aluminum sesquichlorohydrate (Anhydrous). It is the only over-the-counter antiperspirant with this ingredient.

Certain Dri ® Solid Anti-Perspirant is effective for reducing excessive underarm perspiration (axillary hyperhidrosis), as well as for occasional, excessive perspiration due to stress, heat, sports, occupation, etc.

Because of the therapeutic ingredients/formulation, Certain Dri® Solid Anti-Perspirant is applied sparingly at bedtime. This allows it to work overnight. It will not wash off after bathing/showering in the morning. In many cases, users will discover that it will not be necessary to apply Certain Dri Solid Anti-Perspirant every night to control their perspiration problem. It can be used in conjunction with the new daily deodorant, Certain Dri® A.M. Underarm RefresherTM or another morning-applied deodorant of your choice.

Availability: Available in mass market retail, supermarkets and drug stores nationwide, as well as via online retailers and at www.certaindri.com. Suggested retail price for the 1.7 ounce solid stick is $5.50 – $5.99.

If over-the-counter options don’t solve the issue of excessive sweating for you personally, you should speak to a dermatologist or other health professional about a stronger prescription antiperspirant or other options available.

If lunchtime is the only time you can fit in a regular workout, there are several simple things that you can do to cool down so you don’t return to your desk too sweaty.

On the night before your workout apply Certain Dri Anti-Perspirant to your underarms before you go to bed. Your pores will absorb it at night and a morning shower won’t diminish its action. Sold over-the-counter, Certain Dri Antiperspirant contains 12 percent aluminum chloride, the most effective active ingredient used in prescription antiperspirants. Yet, Certain Dri Antiperspirant is water-based (vs. alcohol-based as in prescription antiperspirants), gentler on the skin and available without a doctor’s prescription.

Here are few other things you can do to combat noticeable sweat and body odor after some lunchtime exercise:

Cool Down period of workout – time may be short during your lunch hour workout, but it’s important to account for the cool down period. This gives the body a chance to “throw off” some heat before getting into the shower or before you get back to the office.

Cool Your Core - Drink cool water or some other beverage as it’s the body’s internal temperature that you are trying to cool.

Cool Shower –Taking a cool shower after your workout will help cool your body temperature down quick and wash away odor causing perspiration.

Cool Your Soles: According to the new Certain Dri Feet survey*, 30 percent of U.S. adults admit to suffering from problematic foot sweat and odor. A lunchtime workout can only exasperate this problem. Certain Dri recently took perspiration control one step further, literally, and introduced new Certain Dri Feet Moisture Control Pads, which are recommended by the American Podiatric Medical Association, and Certain Dri Microsponge Powder, with a patented Microsponge® Delivery System that is triggered into action with heat, friction or moisture to release five odor fighting ingredients all day long. The two new products can be used together to offer maximized results in controlling excessive foot perspiration and odor, helping to maintain a feeling of fresh, dry feet all day.

Back up System – And for those who want added odor protection apply your favorite daily deodorant after you shower.

If over-the-counter options don’t solve the issue of excessive sweating/odor of the underarms or feet, speak to a dermatologist, podiatrist or other health professional about a stronger prescription antiperspirant or other options available.

Please be sure to check out the latest “in the news” postings. We are also excited to announce that Certain Dri Anti-Perspirant was recommended by dermatologist Dr. Jeanine Downie in a “Solving Summer Skin Issues” segment on Today Show on July 9, 2008.

Did you know?…...

Thirty percent of U.S. adults - which translates to more than 70 million people nationwide - admit to suffering from problematic foot sweat; three-quarters of this group also battle foot odor

Forty-five percent of U.S. adults - which translates to almost 110 million people - report that perspiration is either "sometimes" or "often" a problem for them

Excessive sweat seems to be a problem, pits to toes, for many. Here, some of our experts offer help so you can wear the clothes and shoes you love without worry:

“The Pit Stop” with Dr. David Bank, dermatologist and director of The Center for Dermatology, Cosmetic and Laser Surgery:

If you are looking for relief from excessive perspiration in a product available at the drug store, the best formula would be one that contains aluminum chloride, such as Certain Dri, which is closest to the prescription formula that dermatologists have been recommending successfully to patients for many years. A person who has axillary hyperhidrosis [excessive sweating of the underarms] may find very little relief from these newer products marketed as ‘clinical strength’ regardless of what time of the day they apply it, because the formulas are not necessarily strong enough. Certain Dri Anti-Perspirant contains 12% aluminum chloride and is available online and in mass market retailers, supermarkets, drug stores nationwide for $5.50.

“Stomp Out Sweaty Feet” with Dr. Oliver Zong, director of foot surgery at NYC Foot Care and attending physician at New York Hospital Downtown:

Most shoes do not allow for foot perspiration to evaporate naturally. The dark, warm, moist environment inside shoes then encourages the growth of bacteria and fungi, leading contributors to foot problems, including odor, Athlete’s Foot, blisters and toenail fungus. Approved by the American Podiatric Medical Association, new Certain Dri FEET Moisture Control Pads contain 12 percent aluminum chloride, the ingredient recommended by podiatrists to help control excessive foot moisture (plantar hyperhidrosis).

Certain Dri FEET Microsponge Powder is specifically developed for people suffering from excessive foot odor, a condition known as bromhidrosis. The powder contains the patented Microsponge Delivery System that is triggered into action with heat, friction or moisture to release five odor fighting ingredients that provide several levels of odor defense:

• A protective barrier that prevents air from coming into contact with moisture/sweat
• Two antibacterials to help prevent the formation of odor causing bacteria
• An odor neutralizer that continuously works to prevent odor
• A light menthol scent that helps keep feet fresh all day.

Both Certain Dri FEET products are available online and mass market retailers, drugstores and supermarkets nationwide for $7.99 each.

We know planning a summer wardrobe is no fun if you fear “pitting out” and showing off your noticeable sweat.

Did you know our bodies – particularly in hot weather – can lose up to a quart of fluid per day, but this is just the average for those individuals who have “normal” perspiration? Someone like yourself who sweats more than you want to or who is diagnosed with an excessive sweating problem, will sweat even more.

So now what are you supposed to do? Don’t worry, there are options!

While there are several ways to “curb the water works” including surgery or Botox injections to the underarm area, Certain Dri’s expert derm, Dr. David Bank, recommends that most people start with the least invasive and least expensive options first. Here’s what he suggests for a sweat-free, dry summer wardrobe:

Hang Loose: Wear loose fitting clothes to allow air to circulate around the body, allowing sweat to evaporate. Tight-fitting clothes cause sweat to be trapped in a film on the skin, which can result in body odor or noticeable sweat stains.

Go Natural: Wear natural fibers next to the skin, such as cotton, which allow the skin to breathe. Avoid synthetic man-made fibers, such as nylon or spandex that limit ventilation and actually trap moisture.

Powder’s a Plus: Apply a cornstarch-based body powder to help keep skin dryer throughout the day.

Antiperspirant vs. Deodorant: Curb the waterworks while you sleep. Look for Certain Dri Anti-Perspirant Roll-On with 12 percent aluminum chloride, which is the same active ingredient in prescription-strength antiperspirants, but in a gentler, non-alcohol formula. Certain Dri Antiperspirant is clinically tested and dermatologist-recommended as the most effective solution for excessive underarm sweating, as well as for occasional, excessive sweating due to stress, heat, sports, occupation, etc.

Chill Out: Consider relaxation techniques, such as yoga. This can help to control the stress that can also trigger perspiration. Many times people who suffer from excessive sweating also worry about it so much that they create a spiral effect. Suffering from excessive sweating can be a debilitating condition on an emotional, social and functional level.

Eat and Drink Right: For some, certain foods and beverages can exacerbate an excessive sweating problem and also cause increased body odor, such as drinks that contain caffeine or foods that contain high amounts of garlic or onions.

If you suffer from sweaty feet and need help, check out the new Certain Dri Feet products at http://www.certaindrifeet.com. These two new products control problematic foot perspiration and odor.

If over-the-counter options don’t solve the issue of excessive perspiration for you personally, you should speak to your dermatologist or other health professional about a stronger prescription antiperspirant or other medical procedures/options now available.

Visit http://www.certaindri.com for additional information about the products. Or visit www.certaindri.com/ww for a special sweepstakes offer from Certain Dri and Woman’s World magazine.
